Prof. Vijay Gupta



Vijay Gupta completed B.Tech. from IIT Delhi in Mechanical Engineering in 1968 where he was awarded the President of India Gold Medal. He completed Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering from University of Minnesota, USA in 1972.

He joined at IIT Kanpur as a faculty member in 1973 and has worked there till 2007, except for short sabbaticals as VisitingProfessor at University of Minnesota, and deputations to head the School of Engineering and IT at South Asia InternationalUniversity, Hyderabad, and to head PEC University of Technology, Chandigarh as its Director/Vice-Chancellor. He was the Vice-chancellor of Lovely Professional University at Jalandhar as well as the Director of G D Goenka World Institute. He also holds an appointment as an Honorary Professor at RI Gandhinagar.

He was awarded in 2006 the honour of Punjab Ratna for his achievement in quickly turning around the academic environment of Punjab Engineering College, Chandigarh.He is a member of the Technical Education panel of the National Knowledge Commission and has been a member of AICTE’s Board of UG education in Engineering.

He has thirteen books published by international publishers, included one book to popularize engineering among school children. He has produced many video films on popular technology. For one of these he was awarded the Best Presentation Award in the National Educational Film Festival of UGU in 1994. He has also produced several video lecture series

including one for NATAL He has authored many research papers and technical reports. He has consulted widely for public and private sector companies and contributed to several national projects in the areas of aerodynamics and engineering fluid mechanics. His main areas of interest are bio-fluid mechanics, high-speed aerodynamics; and development of teaching- learning processes in education.
