Department of Pediatrics organized an event CME: Step Up For Breastfeeding Week from 1st to 7th Aug 2022

Program Objective:

• To create awareness about early and exclusive breastfeeding among the community.
• To educate health professionals, undergraduates, interns and nursing staff to promote and motivate early breastfeeding and exclusive breastfeeding in the community.

Program Description:

• The CME started with registration of participants and faculty members at 8.30 AM followed by a poster gallery walk presented by nursing students, nursing staff , interns and undergraduates which was judged by our 3 eminent judges; Dr R K Thapar, Prof and Head of Department of Pediatrics, Dr M P Mahato, Professor (Pediatrics) and Mrs Saramma Mathew, Chief Nursing Officer. There were a total of 24 entries which were judged on the basis of theme depiction, neatness, color combination and creativity. Three winners were selected on the basis of the criteria laid down.
• This was followed by a counseling session of lactating mothers attending the pediatric OPD, newly delivered mothers in the postnatal ward and pregnant females attending the gynecology OPD along with interns and undergraduate students in our Pediatric OPD Demonstration Room by Dr Smita Nair, Assistant Professor, Pediatrics. In this session, importance was given to the correct feeding position and technique and clarifying the common myths related to breastfeeding through a series of videos and poster and verbal communication. The mothers also clarified some doubts they had regarding the same and were motivated to initiate early breastfeeding in the first hour and practice exclusive breastfeeding for first 6 months.
• We then held a quiz competition for the undergraduate students of MBBS batch 2018 at the Dhanvantari Auditorium which was moderated and conducted by our Professor (Dr) Bindu T Nair. There were a total of 5 teams of 2 students each and 4 rounds (2 general, 1 visual and 1 rapid fire) out of which first 3 teams were selected as winners. It was an interesting session with audience questions in which the students were encouraged to respond to the trivia and there was the need of tie breaking questions to decide the 1st and 2nd position.
